Amulet in the form of the god Thoth as a baboon. Ancient Egypt, New Empire, 1539-1077 BC. Fayenza. Measurements: 6.6 x 3 x 2 cm. Full-body amulet of the god Thoth in the form of a baboon. It is made of Egyptian glazed faience, a ceramic material with a vitreous exterior finish, which was widely used in Ancient Egypt for making small statues, amulets and other decorative motifs. Tot was the Egyptian deity of wisdom, writing, music, incantations and magic spells, and a lunar symbol. In art he is depicted as an ibis-headed man with a pen or ank and a celestial scribal tablet to record the thoughts, words and deeds of men and weigh them in his scales. He could also be depicted as a baboon, as is the case here. Amulets often took the form of the god Thoth, forming part of grave goods.
