19th century fibula. Pure gold 24kts. Total weight. 118 gr. In good state of preservation. It is complete, with no missing elements or ornamental details. The sheet that forms the fusiform body and the shroud are slightly dented, especially in the area between the body and the spring of the needle, but this does not affect the general appearance or the identification of the object. Measurements: 19.1 x 8.1 x 2.3 cm. The bidding fibula is a 19th-century historical recreation consisting of a fusiform body from which emerges, towards one end, the shroud formed by a truncated pyramid-shaped box, open at the bottom, and, towards the other end, the spire with a loop that acts as a spring. Two free-standing figures, representing a sphinx and a winged lion, are placed in a line above the shroud. On the fusiform body are two anthropomorphic figures, male and female. The surface of the shroud and the fusiform body are covered with various figurative and geometric motifs. The piece is made of pure gold, of which neither silver nor copper could be detected/quantified. Gold refined using modern methods has been used to make this fibula. It is a work of high technical, artistic and historical value, due to its character as an artistic recreation of the period. In conclusion, the whole has a variegated, exotic and certainly imposing appearance, as are some of the original Etruscan fibulae. The technical workmanship is of high quality and the goldsmith responsible for the piece was probably familiar with the original ancient works. In the iconography the goldsmith reflects the taste of his own time, or that of his clients.
