Wagstaff Jr, Curator of Painting at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, to produce a print for the "Ten Works x Ten Painters" portfolio, Motherwell drew on his 1964 work "Atheneum Collage." According to the artist, this composition was ideal to translate into the mixed media format of the collaged screen print. The collage forms a white piece of paper, printed in black ink and torn, laminated to an ochre base sheet. Its use as a design element also marks its beginning in the artist's printmaking oeuvre.
