Lower right with traces of original glue. Punctual superficial scratch marks. Verso slightly irregularly browned and with surface rubbing in spots. Overall very good. Splendid and strong impression with the full margins. One of 500 copies, numbered in the imprint. - From the portfolio "X + X (Ten Works by Ten Painters)." - Published by The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut and Ives-Sillman, New Haven, Connecticut 1964. - Printed by Ives-Sillman, Inc, New Haven, CT, Sirocco Screenprinters (with the dry stamp). - Invited by Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr, Curator of Painting at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, to produce a print for the "Ten Works x Ten Painters" portfolio, Motherwell drew on his 1964 work "Atheneum Collage." According to the artist, this composition was ideal to translate into the mixed media format of the collaged screen print. The collage forms a white piece of paper, printed in black ink and torn, laminated to an ochre base sheet. Its use as a design element also marks its beginning in the artist's printmaking oeuvre.
