He began his training with Romanino in the Venetian sphere of the Mannerist school, especially in the wake of Titian. In the period 1544-46 he was apprenticed in Padua to Domenico Campagnola and Lambert Sustris. After a brief Venetian period he moved permanently to Rome in 1550. Thanks to his art expressed with deep belief and pathos, he found wide acceptance in the Rome of the time by interpreting the expressed canons propounded by the Counter-Reformation. Today his works can be found preserved in Rome at the Colonna Gallery, the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, the National Galleries of Ancient Art and the Vatican Pinacoteca, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, and many other Roman places of worship.
