The battle of Gilboa and the suicide of Saul

Trained in Florence, Antonio Tempesta collaborated with Giovanni Stradano on the frescoes in the Palazzo Vecchio. From 1573, in Rome, commissioned by Gregory XIII Boncompagni he decorated the Third Loggia with the ten panels of the Translation of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus and the Maps in the Vatican Palaces. Also in Rome he worked for Alessandro Farnese, Scipione Borghese and in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini. Between 1579 and 1581 he made the grotesques for the ceilings of the Uffizi Gallery, later completed by Alessandro Allori and Ludovico Cigoli. An important draughtsman and etcher, Antonio Tempesta engraved the so-called Tempest Bible, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Life of the Virgin and Jesus, and the famous Map of Rome.
