Venetian Lombard school of the 16th century
Christ carrying the cross and a henchman
Oil and gold on canvas
75 x 57 cm
The painting shows an interesting and articulate artistic language, the result of a learned interweaving of pictorial cultures. In it we notice Venetian elements, such as the subject and the pictorial matter, Lombard elements, such as the dark background, very much in use among Leonardo's followers, and finally a strong expressive charge in the face of Christ and caricature in the face of the henchman that highlight a Nordic-German influence. In this regard we recall Albrecht Dürer, who stayed twice in Venice, between 1494 and 1495 and then in 1506, and dialogued extensively with Giovanni Bellini and the Venetian artistic milieu.
