Michiel or Michael Sweerts (Brussels 1618 - Goa 1664) Interior with girl and old woman Oil on canvas 48 x 38 cm Provenance: Fischer Gallery Lucerne (Switzerland) November 30, 1965 - Private collection Milan. Michiel Sweerts arrived in Rome, where he met the group of Dutch and Flemish artists, led by the painter Pieter van Laer known as Il Bamboccio, devoted to depicting scenes of popular life in Rome and the surrounding countryside. Sweerts is universally considered to be on the sidelines of the Bamboccianti because of the dignity displayed by his popular characters.
