Giovanni Ghisolfi (Milan ca. 1623 - 1683) Ruins with characters Oil on canvas 74 x 95 cm The work features elements characteristic of Ghisolfi's artistic expression, the usual organizational structure of volumes, perspective, and the leaden atmosphere that permeates the scene. Also recurring is the presence of the sphinx on the left among the ruins, a detail we find identically in Capriccio, no. 23 on p. 130 of vol. II, "Architectural Capriccio in Italy in the 17th and 18th Centuries," edited by G. Sestieri.
