Bartolomeo Ramenghi called the Bagnacavallo "Senior" (Bagnacavallo 1484 - Bologna 1542) Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine and Francis Oil on panel 72 x 62 cm We thank Professor Michele Danieli for providing the attribution of the painting, dating it around 1540. Dutiful attributive matches can be seen in other works of the period such as: The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine preserved in Brera, the Holy Family in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, and Madonna and Child with St. Francis in the Pinacoteca Civica di Forlì. In Bagnocavallo's late phase there is a gradual move away from the classicist culture of Lorenzo Costa and Francesco Francia, their suave softness and mystical aura. One senses an influence of Raphael, with a more immediate and synthetic pictorial and chromatic approach, as well as certain northern expressive asperities, probably inferred from the various Flemish painters present in Ferrara and Emilia. Finally, as Professor Danieli points out, "the elegant elongation of forms, and certain details, such as, for example, the face of the Assisi saint, presage the manner of his son Giovanni Battista Ramenghi (Bologna 1521 - 1601)."
