CELTS. SWITZERLAND. HELVETII. Helvetii. Helvetii. Stater ø 21mm (6.49g). Late 2nd c. B.C. Vs: Beardless head with streaked crescent curls n. r., dots in curl arches, the whole in crescent circle. R.: Biga with charioteer n. l., the horses with spiked hair, the whole in pearl circle. Cf. D. F. Allen, The Philippus in Switzerland and the Rhineland, SNR 53 (1974), pl. 9-12. D & T - (cf. 3074 ff.). RRR. Gold! ss The type does not seem to be recorded in the relevant literature. The closest relative is apparently the so-called type Crainvillier , named after a place in the Vosges. This type was struck on a similar block and is also decorated on the obverse with a circle of crescents, albeit pointing outwards. However, the head on the obverse is iconographically different and on the reverse there is only a team with a horse. The distribution area of the Crainvillier type is relatively large, so that various tribes in the East Gaulish region are possible issuers.
