DAUDET Alphonse
WITH AUTOGRAPH DISPATCH
L'Arlésienne
Paris, Lemerre, 1872
In-12°.
Contemporary deep green half-maroquin. 5-rib spine decorated with cold filets. Marbled edges. Corners very slightly rubbed. Very fresh inside.
Original edition of which no large paper was printed.
On the title page, a rare autograph letter from the author to the actor Coquelin: "À mon cher ami Coquelin. Un pas-de-veine. Alphonse Daudet".
This play, a stage adaptation of the short story of the same name published in "Lettres de mon moulin" in 1869, was first performed at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on October 1, 1872. It was a failure for Daudet, as the above-mentioned letter to Coquelin might suggest.
