PAIR OF FLINTLOCK POMMEL PISTOLS ATTRIBUTED TO AN OFFICER OF THE BODYGUARDS OF KING LOUIS XVI.
Round barrels with flattened tops and thunderbolts. Engraved breech shrouds, nicely decorated in gold with flowers, florets and foliage. Flat-bodied gooseneck locks and hammers, engraved with loves and foliage. Radiating dog jaws. Silver trimmings decorated with shells, foliage and flowers en suite. Day-marked counter plates. Long-eared caps decorated with flowers and foliage on an amati background. Sunburst cap nails. Walnut crosses with long shafts, partly carved on the backs, with silver thumbpiece and inlaid silver wire decoration. Fanon sticks with iron tips.
Length: 36.5 cm.
Both barrels bear the hallmark of Gillier frère ainé in St Etienne.
E.M. Louis XVI period (wear and knocks from use, groove under one lock and repair to the stock for one; crack on the other, bridges to be refixed).
