Spanish Goyaesque school, late 19th century. "La misa de laparida". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 52 x 76 cm; 81 x 106 cm (frame). Painting of Goyaesque inspiration that takes place in the interior of a church presided by a priest who turns his back to us, situated facing the altar. Behind him, the congregation is made up of eighteenth-century aristocrats and women dressed in rigorous white, kneeling, holding a missal in their hands. The title refers to a type of mass attended by a woman for the first time after childbirth. The undone brushstrokes and the predominance of earthy tones, in intense contrast with the whites, are reminiscent of Goya, but also of the last period of Fortuny, who must also have been taken as a point of reference by the present painter. The Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Agen houses a painting by Goya with the same title.
