Italian school, 18th century. "Stigmata of Saint Francis". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It presents some lack in the frame. Measurements: 92 x 72 cm; 115 x 94 cm (frame). Italian painting of the late Baroque. Saint Francis of Assisi, wearing a humble dark brown habit knotted at the waist with a rope, rests his left hand on his heart and holds with the right the palm of martyrdom. His torso is adorned with arrows, a symbolism that alludes to the biblical episode in which the miracle of the transmission of Jesus' stigmata onto his body is narrated. Here, however, the painter eschews iconographic orthodoxy by replacing the wounds with arrows. At the same time, the fire alludes to another episode in the saint's life: the one in which Saint Francis, in order not to be tempted by a beautiful woman, throws himself into the embers and emerges from them unharmed.
