LARGE PANSU VASE in dark blue glazed stoneware in the Sumidagawa style, the body decorated with monkeys and climbing children in high-relief glazed bisque. Signed on the base. (Minor restorations and chips). Japan, 20th century. A LARGE BLUE EMBOSSED GLAZED SANDSTONE SUMIDAGAWA VASE, JAPAN, 20TH CENTURY. HEIGHT. 32 CM (12 5/8 IN.) NOTE Sumidagawa is a robust-looking stoneware with a high-gloss glaze, often decorated with rich embossed decoration. Sumida Gawa is the name of a river near Tokyo, Japan, from which this export-oriented production originated, particularly for the American market. The relief elements on this vase are part of the traditional Japanese iconographic repertoire. Profane and satirical, we discover both divine and demonic figures from popular beliefs, such as the monkey.
