LARGE PANSU VASE in dark blue glazed stoneware in the Sumidagawa style, the body decorated with monkeys and climbing children in high-relief glazed bisque. Signed on the base. NOTE Sumidagawa is a robust-looking stoneware with a high-gloss glaze, often decorated with rich embossed decoration. Sumida Gawa is the name of a river near Tokyo, Japan, from which this export-oriented production originated, particularly for the American market. The relief elements on this vase are part of the traditional Japanese iconographic repertoire.
