Bronze rod Bwa / Gurunsi, Burkina Faso Mit Sockel / with base Yellow cast. H 55 cm. Provenance: - Gallery Walu, Zurich, Switzerland (before 1996). - Hammer Auctions Basel, Switzerland. Auction 40, Apr. 27, 2019, lot 25. - Swiss private collection, St. Gallen, Switzerland. The term Gurunsi does not refer to a single ethnic group, but to a number of ethnic groups in southern Burkina Faso and northern Ghana that are culturally distinct despite linguistic affinities (Gurunsi language). These are essentially the Nuna, Nunuma, Lyélé, Winiama, Sisaala and Kassena. The Bwa live north of the Gurunsi, in the center of Burkina Faso and in the southeast of Mali. The production of bronze objects in the lost wax process is a tradition from Ghana to Mali since time immemorial. The staff offered here probably comes from the environment of a highly respected fortune teller. Cf.: Ndiaye, Francine / Massa, Gabriel. (2004). L'oiseau dans l'art de l`Afrique de l'Ouest. Saint-Maur-des-Fossés: Editions Sépia. Page 53.
