Memorial head Asante, Ghana Ohne Sockel / without base Terracotta. H 23 cm. Provenance: Beatrice Leutert and Marcel Plüss, Thurgau, Switzerland. The name "Akan" refers to a group of peoples of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana who are linguistically and culturally related. These include, for example, the Asante, the Fante or also the Baule. Idealized effigies made of fired clay were placed in separate groves in memory of ancestors. They were ceremonially worshipped there until no one could remember them. The terracottas, radiating calm and serenity, were thus materialized links between this world and the next, which could serve similar purposes as monuments or gravestones elsewhere.
