Paris, Mercure de France, 1918 (printed April 5), in-8, full tan calf, smooth spine, floral decorations on the boards, delimiting four reserves enhanced in gold and a large reserve in the center, lined with red silk, inner laces, cover and spine preserved, gilt head, untrimmed, slipcase (period binding, signed Franz), 272 p. First edition. One of 37 numbered copies on Japon, (the only large paper with 5 Chine, hors commerce). Published under the pseudonym Denis Thévenin, this is one of the most important works published immediately after the end of the war, and won the Prix Goncourt 1918. Georges Duhamel was a military doctor during the Great War (in the ambulances chirurgicales automobiles, ACA, also known as the Autochir), and two of his first books, Vie des martyrs (1917) and Civilisation (1918), are based on his experience.
