Diplôme de membre correspondant de la Société de sphragistique délivré à Renier Chalon. Paris typogr. de Firmin Didot frères January 5, 1855 26 x 37 cm, hand-printed and completed, on wove leather, aut. signatures of Arthur Forgeais, president, and two secretaries (slight soiling to signatures, which remain very legible, central fold due to mailing). Founded in 1848 by the French archaeologist, sigillographer and numismatist Arthur Forgeais (1822-1878), the Société de sphragistique (an old-fashioned synonym for sigillography) had inspired Chalon to create an imaginary Société nationale de boutonistique, announced in 1851 in a prospectus that pastiched that of the "Recueil des travaux de la Société de sphragistique" (cf. 33). This farce did not prevent our Montois from being admitted to the aforementioned society, for which he wrote a very serious "Notice sur les sceaux du chapitre de Sainte-Waudru à Mons" (Recueil des travaux [...], Paris, 1855, IV:193-211). Réf. Dinaux, A. - Les sociétés badines, bachiques, littéraires et chantantes: leur histoire et leurs travaux. Paris, 1867, pp. 122-129. - Delepierre, O. - Supercheries littéraires, pastiches [...]. London, 1872, pp. 255-256. - De Callataÿ & Sorgeloos 103. Joint : Forgeais, A. - L.a.s. to R. Chalon accompanying the diploma. P., 15-04-1855. Bifeuillet in-4°: 1 p., Society letterhead (slight browning). He mentions the notice Chalon is preparing for their journal. (2 pcs)
