Diplôme de membre du Congrès international des orientalistes issued to Renier Chalon. Paris imp. Peyre September 19, 1873 27.5 x 44.5 cm, lithogr. and compl. by hand, in French and Japanese, on tinted laid paper, aut. signatures of the members of the organizing and patronage committees (a few small tears at bottom of doc., slight browning). This was the very first congress of its kind, devoted exclusively to Japanese studies at the time, and soon extended to other fields of Oriental studies. The date and Chalon's name in Japanese have been handwritten in red ink. He had been invited in his capacity as member of the Académie royale de Belgique and president of the Société royale de numismatique. Ref.
