Institute founded in 1840 "with the aim of contributing to the civilization and universal colonization of Africa [and to] protect and enlighten the African race" (Art. 1 of the statutes). Each colonizing country was represented by a section. A handsome document with a large ornamented border incorporating the names of various African countries and cities.
