DARDEL, Léon Printing plate representing 2 medals in effigy and honor of Renier Chalon. S.l. [1882] Copper, 20.2 x 13.2 cm (stains, a few traces of oxidation on margins, a few light scratches). Engraved plaque depicting: 1. medal in honor of R. Chalon's 80th birthday, decorated on the right with a head of Athena, engraved by Charles Trotin in 1882. - 2. uniface medallion commemorating the granting of the Commandery in the Order of Leopold, struck in 1882, unsigned but reproducing the type engraved by Charles Würden in 1880 (cf. no. 22). Little-known Parisian artist L. Dardel (1814-?), official engraver of the French "Revue numismatique" from 1848 to 1888, was considered "the master in his field" (Hollard, p. 17). Ref. De Callataÿ & Sorgeloos 106:8, 107:9. - Hollard, Dominique - "L'illustration numismatique au XIXe siècle", in Revue numismatique. 33, 1991, pp. 7-42. Prov. "E. George, 21 r. de la Vieille Estrapade à Paris" (engraved mark on verso, probably from a supplier of engraving equipment). Attached: ep. print of the plate (slight foxing and marg. soiling). (2 pcs)
