DARDEL, Léon Printing plate representing a medal in the effigy of Renier Chalon. Bruxelles Imp. J. Bouwens [1880] Copper, 24 x 15 cm (light oxidation stains partly affecting the portrait). Engraved plate for the "Revue belge de numismatique" (1880, pl. XXIII) depicting the medal struck on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the Société royale de numismatique de Belgique, with the portrait of its president Renier Chalon on the right, chiseled by Charles Würden (cf. no. 22). This plate also bears the engraving of another medal reproduction (also numbered XXIII), featuring the effigy of P.A. Louis De Coster. Little-known Parisian artist L. Dardel (1814-?), official engraver of the French "Revue numismatique" from 1848 to 1888, was considered "the master in his field" (Hollard, p. 17). Ref. De Callataÿ & Sorgeloos 106:6. - Hollard, Dominique - "L'illustration numismatique au XIXe siècle", in Revue numismatique. 33, 1991, pp. 7-42. Prov. "E. George, 21 r. de la Vieille Estrapade à Paris" (engraved mark on verso, probably from a supplier of engraving equipment). Attached: epoch print of the plate depicting Chalon (slight marg. foxing).
