CHALON, Renier Mélanges de numismatique et d'archéologie [...]. Bruxelles Fr. Gobbaerts 1880 6 vol. in-8° (rare russeting and wetness to some parts). Contemporary dark green chagrin, triple gilt fillet around covers, gilt spines with gilt fleurons, gilt int. teeth, gilt t. covers (some minor rubbing, spines slightly faded). Fine untrimmed copy. Factitious collection produced at Chalon's request, probably for family and friends, bringing together more than 200 offprints, notices, notules, reviews, etc., from 2 to about 50 pages, arranged in chronological order, i.e. 180 numbered items (t. I-V) and 22 unnumbered items (t. VI). "These dummy collections were completed after his death by his heirs, who added obituaries relating to Chalon" (Cl. Sorgeloos, in De Callataÿ & Sorgeloos, p. 94). With the exception of t. VI, which has no table, its composition having been at least partly left to the discretion of the owners, Chalon had a faux-titre, a title bearing his monogram and a table of contents printed for each volume. In addition to writings in the fields of numismatics, history and archaeology, the collection contains some of the Montois scholar's facetious writings. A.- Numismatics and archaeology: ± 100 numismatic articles, including several illustrated plates, some in color,- ± 20 articles of a historical or archaeological nature, half of which relate to Mons,- ± 10 biographical notes, some speeches, reviews or curiosities (e.g. "Littérature judiciaire" on a case of a married priest). B.- Pranks and hoaxes: 1. Catalogue [...] de Fortsas [...]. 2nd ed. Brux, Van Trigt, [1863]. Only reprint authorized by the author, printed in an edition of 200 copies (ex. non num. on tinted laid paper). Ref. G. de le Court, Fortsas, 33B.
