Virulent commentary on "a tumultuous and scandalous incident" that occurred at the start of the parliamentary session concerning a fifteen-year-old girl who died in Ghent and was buried without the assistance of the clergy. The Namur botanist and writer J. Chalon (1846-1921), cousin of Renier Chalon, was a very active secular activist. In his novel "Le trou des chiens" (1895), inspired by an expression attributed to certain village priests and recalled in this brochure, he was already defending the principle of civil burial.
