Collection of 128 military buttons. Late 18th - early 20th c. Ø between 13 mm and 37 mm, most in gilded, silvered or copper-plated metal, some in other materials: horn, enamel, eglomisé (rare traces of oxidation, some traces of use, otherwise well preserved). Under a gilded molded wood frame glazed with the original glass, with a later removable plywood stand secured with 8 small brass latches (minor chips). Good condition. Buttons mainly French and Belgian - armies of the Revolution and Empire, French Republic, national gendarmerie, Belgian civic guard, etc. - but also Dutch and British. -But also Dutch and British (1 from the "Australian Military Force", after 1916). Saint-Gilles (Bruxelles), Decq, 1851. In-8°. Br. in publisher's printed cover (small marg. tear). Facetious publication due to the mystifying talent of R. Chalon, who pastiched a prospectus from the "Recueil des travaux de la Société de sphragistique" (Paris, 1851-1855), announcing the formation of a "Société nationale de boutonistique" of his own invention to mock "collectors of small things" (canes, snuffboxes, fans, pipes, etc.). Réf. Dinaux, A. - Les sociétés badines, bachiques, littéraires et chantantes: leur histoire et leurs travaux. Paris, 1867, pp. 122-129. - Delepierre, O. - Supercheries littéraires, pastiches [...]. London, 1872, pp. 255-256. - De Callataÿ & Sorgeloos 103 (2 pcs)
