Pair of dies for the commemorative medal for the new fortifications of Mons. S.l. s.n. [1825] Bronze, D 56 mm x H 11 mm and 53 x 11 mm (stains and slight signs of use). Good condition. Exceptional dies for an unusual, unsigned medal. The one on the right features the king's profile on the left with the inscription "Guillaume I roi des Pays Bas grand duc de Lux"; the obverse depicts a view of Mons surrounded by fortifications, above which is the city's coat of arms surmounted by a crown and the inscription "Nova Moenia surgunt MDCCCXXV". These ramparts, built under Dutch rule between 1816 and 1825, were dismantled forty years later, under the reign of Leopold I. Ref.
