Musketeer's saber of the 1st Companion of the King's Household, model 1814. Basane-covered handle with filigree. Chased brass mounting. Short-tailed cap. Battle hilt, with one main branch, four secondary branches, shell with fleur-de-lys musketeer cross, silver-plated center. Counter-shell and quillon boulé decorated with palmettes. Flat-backed blade marked "Frères Weyersberg à ...", with point in the extension of the back, two hollow sides, hallmarked "AP". Leather scabbard with three gilded brass fittings. Iron sting. ABE (restorations, added quillon, posterior watermark, accidents and repairs to leather, pitting). The musketeer is a cavalryman armed with a musket. The corps was created in 1622 by King Louis XIII and is part of the King's Military Household. The Captain of the company is the King. It was composed exclusively of gentlemen who had already served in the King's household. The company was disbanded in 1646, then recreated by Louis XIV. Louis XVI dissolved it in 1775, and his brother Louis XVIII recreated it in 1814, only to abolish it definitively in 1816. Since Louis XIV, there have been 2 Compagnies, the 1st called grey because of the color of the horses' coats, the 2nd called black.
