George SAND. Mont-Revêche. Paris, Alexandre Cadot, 1853. 4 volumes in-8 with (2) ff. 315 pp. ; (2) ff. 307 pp. ; (2) ff. 308 pp. 347 pp. Half green long-grained morocco with corners, ornate smooth spines, untrimmed, gilt-edged heads, blue paper covers and spines (L. Pouillet). First edition. This largely autobiographical novel was serialized in Le Pays from October 12 to December 9, 1852. George Sand "left a testimony to the profound mutations of 19th-century French society equivalent to that of Mme de La Fayette and Mme de Sévigné for the 17th century, for having had no equal in literature, she was the only one able to write from the inside about the rivalry between mothers and daughters, a taboo subject but just as 'normal' as the duels between fathers and sons that abound in novels written by men" (Nicole Mozet in Romantisme, n° 76, 1992, p. 136). One of the rare copies on large Hollande paper. A very fine copy. It bears, on the first cover, this autograph note signed by the author's son: "Edition sur papier de Hollande, Maurice Sand." (Vicaire VII, 247: "il a été tiré au moins deux ex. sur pap. de Hollande qui figurent au Catalogue de la bibliothèque de Mme George Sand et de M. Maurice Sand").
