Cornelis Visscher (1629 - 1662), Oval portrait of William II, Count of Holland and King of the Romans. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Dimensions with frame: 47.5 x 37.5 cm . Signed lower left. Dutch Golden Age engraver. Good condition, paper insolate, some foxing. William II, (1227- 1256), was Count of Holland from 1234 to 1256 and King of the Romans from 1247 to 1256. Son of Florent IV, Count of Holland, and Matilda of Brabant. He was never emperor. He was only seven when his father was accidentally killed at a tournament in Corbie in 1234. His uncles William and Otto were appointed regents of the County of Holland, from 1234 to 1239. With the support of his uncle Henry II, Duke of Brabant, and the Archbishop of Cologne, he was elected King of the Romans in 1247. After a five-month siege, William captured Aachen from Frederick II's supporters, and was crowned king in 1248.
