Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) after - Reflection of Mount Fuji in Lake Kawaguchi, seen from Misaka Pass in Kai Province, Japan - Print from the "36 views of Fuji" series - Fugaku sanjûrokkei. Sheet size: 26.5 x 39 cm, date: 1960s, Here, Hokusai presents a bird's-eye view of Lake Kawaguchi and the small thatched-roof village at the foot of the volcano. The curving, verdant lines of the landscape contrast sharply with the brown, fissured triangle of the sacred mountain. But this print is also remarkable for its singularity. Here, Fuji's summit appears entirely devoid of its eternal snow, while its reflection in the water of the lake reflects a different image. Here, Hokusai undoubtedly symbolizes the insignificance of the seasons and the inexorable permanence of time.
