A rare early 20th-century kinjal (dagger) made in Dagestan, Caucasus. The mounts are made of engraved silver and finished with niello. The reverse of the scabbard is decorated with niello Magen David (David's Shield) and a wreath. It is inscribed in Hebrew, with the name of the owner "Michael Ben Reuven" as well as a blessing for prosperity and the date 1910. The front side of the sheath is beautifully engraved with floral motives throughout its entire length. This is a unique remnant of the Jewish community in the Caucus, where daggers such as this one were inseparable companions of Caucasians. Dimensions: L: 20 1/8 in., (51 cm.) The scabbard shows a small dent on the reverse at the throat. The blade is slightly pitted.
