18th century Italian school, after the antique Asclepios Marble sculpture H. 43 cm Related work : Esculapio, marble, Naples, Farnese Collection, National Archaeological Museum, inv. 6360. Asclepius or Aesculapius, son of Apollo and Coronis, trained as a physician with the Centaur Chiron. He became the god, and is traditionally depicted as a bearded man carrying a staff with a snake wrapped around it.
