HANS TRUÖL (1920-1981) | Volkswagen Beetle at 'Passo Stelvio' panorama road, Italy c. 1955
Image Size: 18,3 x 18,8 cm
English:
Gelatin silver print, printed later on single-weight ferrotyped paper 18,3 x 23,8 cm, in perfect condition. Photographer's stamp in green ink and numbered "T 611/6" in pencil on the reverse.
The Stelvio Pass panoramic road with 48 hairpin bends is the highest mountain pass in Italy in the Ortler region. In the foreground is a "KdF. car" that later became known as the VW Beetle Type 1. Since curved glass was too expensive, flat windshields were installed as well as a two-piece rear window with a center bar, hence this model was called the "Pretzel Beetle". It was not until March 1953 that an undivided, oval rear window was introduced.
