Elaine STURTEVANT (1930-2014). "Peinture à haute tension". Mixed media and neon on canvas signed, titled and dated 1970 on the back (dents, scratches and missing parts). Produced in eight copies. Note: It was in the early 1960s that Elaine Sturtevant began copying works by contemporary artists of her time, who were still unknown on the international scene: Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Roy Lichtenstein and later Martial Raysse, as evidenced by our painting. It is part of the second series of eight "Peinture à haute tension" exhibited at Galerie Claude Givaudan in 1970, one year after a first series of eight was shown at the same gallery. Elaine Sturtevant's work was poorly received by critics, who described her as provocative. Her approach of "repetition" and "replication" is part of a reflection on the originality of the work. And leads the viewer to wonder whether it's not the signature that makes the work. Exhibitions : - Paris, Galerie Claude Givaudan, 1970, Sturtevant. Eight paintings and a prototype. - Meymac, Abbaye Saint André Centre d'Art Contemporain, Aspects de l'art du XX siècle. Bibliography: - L.
