Recto: Decretals of Gregory IX, Book V, titulus V (De Magistris...) [Ed. Friedberg, Corpus iuris canonici, II, 770-771, Leipzig, 1879-1881] (chapters IV-V). Followed by: Decretals of Gregory IX, Book V, titulus VI (De Judeis, Sarracenis et eorum servis) [Ed. Friedberg, Corpus iuris canonici, II, 771, Leipzig, 1879-1881] (chapters I-II). Verso: Continuation of the Decretals of Gregory IX, Book V, title VI (De Judaeis, Sarracenis et eorum servis) [Ed. Friedberg, Corpus iuris canonici, II, 772-774, Leipzig, 1879-1881] (chapters II-VIII; the text is interrupted at chapter VIII). Gregory IX's Decretals were compiled in 1234. Book V, title VI deals with the right of "Jews and Saracens" to employ Christians in their service (De Judeis, Sarracenis et eorum servis), here theorized by Canon Law, which attempts to define by law the relations of Christians with non-Christians: the Church's problem was that it had no jurisdiction over non-Christians and had to influence them through temporal authorities, more or less zealous according to the times.
