Bronze. Height 16.3 cm. Signed on the plinth 'A. GAUL', on the reverse on the side edge of the plinth with the foundry stamp "NOACK BERLIN". - With light, golden-brown patina.

The donkey, which the Gaul family had owned since 1907, served the artist as a model for his "Eselei" as early as 1911 (Gabler 158 ff.). In the same year, he worked the small figure of the donkey rider, for which Gaul's son Peter was the model, into a large version (Gabler 180).
