Liber chronicarum. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, July 12, 1493. First edition of this richly illustrated incunabulum. The author compiles information from various sources to tell the story of the world from Genesis to 1493, including numerous views of European cities. In 1490, Nuremberg was a commercial and cultural center and one of the most populous cities in Europe. The Latin edition, intended for an international audience, was published a few months before the German edition. ISTC is00307000; Goff S307; BMC, II, 437; GW M40784; A. "tabula operis", [5] ff. "De Sarmacia regione Europe" (usually bound at the end of the work), ff. I-CCXCIX, [1] f. Leaves 259 to 261 are blank except for a header line. Illustrated with 1809 engravings using 645 woodcuts by Wohlgemuth and Pleydenwurff. Some passages underlined in ink and old handwritten notes. Doubled title leaf. Restorations and gaps filled in the upper part of the last 4 leaves, due to wetness on the preceding quires. Numerous short leaves in upper margin, text occasionally trimmed. Scattered spotting and foxing. 18th-century binding: red morocco, gilt roulettes, central decoration of small floral irons and floral framing à la du Seuil, ribbed spine decorated with small floral irons, green morocco title page, gilt edges. Binding very rubbed, corners damaged, spine faded. Provenance: L.S.
