Madame de Pompadour's copy, in red morocco with her coat of arms. This first French edition uses the same engravings as the original edition published in 1626. Each of the seventy-two monastic and religious orders described in the work features a page of engraved text and a full-length portrait of one of its members. Colas, n°1061; Von Lipperheide, n°1855; Brunet, II, col. 1241. Small in-4 (206 x 155 mm). 2 engraved titles (one in French, the other in Italian), 1 frontispiece, and 144 plates, i.e., for each order, a page of engraved text with the arms of the order and a description in Italian, and opposite, a full-length portrait representing the costume (browning in the lower margin of about half the volume, brown wetness in the upper right-hand corner of the first quire). Binding from the second quarter of the 18th century: red morocco, Madame de Pompadour's coat of arms in the center of the boards, triple gilt fillet framing, smooth spine decorated in the grotesque style, lemon morocco title page, double gilt fillet on the covers, gilt roulette on the edges, marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges (spine slightly faded, some rubbing at the corners). Provenance: Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764; binding with arms, catalog 1765, no. 2483). Madame de Pompadour's copy, bound in red morocco stamped with her arms.
