[Brussels, circa 1707]. Superb 18th-century binding, decorated with petit fers. This is the binding for a series of anti-French pamphlets that flourished during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), particularly at the time of the formation of the Grand Alliance, a coalition of many European powers against Louis XIV. The volume has a general title, but also individual title pages, which might suggest that it is a collection of several pamphlets. Their titles are unambiguous as to their authors' positions: "Appendice de l'almanac roial, ou l'année victorieuse des alliez, de 1706, contre le soleil éclipsé et couchant de France", or this tasty "vacarme au Trianon, ou le nouvel hotel des filles & fils naturels de Louis le Soleiller, pour le consoler à l'égard de son Mars infortuné en Europe". In 1898, Bulletin Morgand attributed the superb binding to Albert Magnus (1642-1689), one of the most famous Dutch bookbinders of the 18th century. This attribution can only be inaccurate, given current knowledge of Magnus's life. Although anonymous, the binding remains of the highest quality, with rich framing decorations in small irons, circumscribing a central medallion of fans. Small folio (306 x 206 mm). 42 intaglio engraved plates. Contemporary binding: red morocco, richly decorated with roulette and petit fresco framing around a large central medallion with fans, ribbed spine, ornate boxes, marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges (spine faded, hinges worn, nerves rubbed, head box missing). Provenance: Bulletin Morgand, n°44, 1898; n°32252 - Alexis de Redé (ex-libris). A fine example of 18th century binding, on a series of political prints and pamphlets, issued during the War of the Spanish Succession. To bid, please consult the "Sales information" section.
