Very ancient Okua anthropomorphic mask, typical of the Idoma, which appeared during funeral ceremonies.
Of great visual power, this mask-heaume combines very distinct sculptural work with a pronounced use of polychromy. The pigments on the face are as if petrified, testifying to the object's age. It is a perfect example of Cross River art. According to Hélène Joubert, inArts du Nigéria dans les collections privées françaisesthe Idoma Okua anthropomorphic mask is typical: (...) "wide, open mouth with teeth; almond-shaped eyes, (...) prominent vertical and temporal frontal scarification".
