Chokwe/Sango comb, Angola

This cisakulo comb features a figure, probably male, riding a quadruped. Common to several examples of this type, this iconography seems to refer directly to the way early Portuguese merchants traveled. Horses were ill-suited to Angola's climate, so travel was by ox. This is reported by Hermenegildo Capelo, a Portuguese naval officer, in his book De Angola à Contracosta (1886).
