Giokono. A very fine quality, marbled green serpentine disc, pierced and bound on a wooden handle covered with dogfish hair. The stone is held in the fork of the handle by braided fiber ligatures (remontage). The base is made of half a coconut covered with tapa and dogfish hair. 19th century. Height: 53 cm. Disc size: 14.8 x 17.7 cm. Melanesia. New Caledonia. Kanak people. Biological information : Dogfish (Pteropus ornatus), classified in Appendices II/B and therefore requiring administrative documents to leave the EU (CITES for re-export and import). We're talking here about ancient and traditionally crafted art objects and ethnographic artefacts, not raw biological elements whose constituent biological elements have been traditionally harvested in the original and traditional cultural contexts of these cultures, in this case in the 19th century. These works of traditional and ancient manufacture pre-date CITES and being "antique" (over 100 years old) pre-date 1947. They are exempt from CITES or CIC when traded and transported on French territory or within the EU, and are in free circulation. Exports from the European Union require CITES or CIC certification, which is the responsibility of the buyer. CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) CITES Appendices I and II are transcribed into Appendices A and B in the European Union, which may be more restrictive. Important : Possession of the documents required by CITES for specimens belonging to species classified in Appendix A or B allows them to be traded and transported within the E.U.. BUT does not authorize their export. To export them outside the E.U., you need to apply for an export permit from the CITES department responsible for your area. Please note: an export permit may be refused by the E.U., but if it is granted this does not imply that the corresponding import permit will automatically be issued by the country of destination: please enquire beforehand. All these formalities are the responsibility of the buyer. In any case, the refusal of a CITES or CIC permit has no effect on the final conclusion of the auction.
