Although this terracotta relief is unpublished, two other marble versions were exhibited at the great Chinard Retrospective at the Louvre in 1909. On his return to Lyon from Rome in 1787, Chinard brought back numerous copies of antiques (some of the marbles in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Ariane ou Bacchante, marble bust, H.82 cm, inv. H808; Bacchus ou Bacchante, marble bust, H.85 cm, inv. H809; Laocoon, marble group, reduced copy after the antique, H.83 cm, inv. A2913). From then on, his career seemed to be launched, and the artist became the sought-after portraitist of Lyon's high society. Our rare and beautiful medallion in the pure neoclassical style in vogue in the Eternal City at the end of the 18th century is part of this early context in the artist's career.
