The antique marble was discovered in 1792 on Prince Borghese's estate in Gabies, near Rome. Acquired by Napoleon in 1807, the work was sent to France and exhibited at the Louvre from 1820. La Diane de Gabies, whose beauty was praised by the critics, was a great success. The model was widely distributed throughout the 19th century, in particular by the publisher Barbedienne.
