These panels, typical of the 15th century, once decorated the ceilings of Lombard palaces, particularly in Mantua, Milan, and especially Cremona. Among the most important exponents of this pictorial expression are Bonifacio Bembo and his workshop. Tables from the Castle of San Martino di Gusnago are preserved in both the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Other paintings are preserved in Milan's Poldi Pezzoli and Castello Sforzesco museums.
