Giovan Pietro Rizzoli known as Giampietrino (1480/1485 - 1553) workshop of Saint Catherine of Alexandria Oil on panel 64.5 x 50 cm Our panel is a workshop replica, i.e., made under the direction of the master and without excluding his intervention, of Giampietrino's Saint Catherine of Alexandria, datable to about 1530-1540, preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The two images diverge in small details and share both support and size. In Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo's Rime ad imitazione de i Grotteschi, Giampietrino is mentioned as a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci along with Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio, Francesco Melzi and Gian Giacomo Caprotti. In 1511, however, he is mentioned in documents pertaining to his profession along with Giovanni Agostino da Lodi, Marco d'Oggiono, and Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio. In addition to Leonardo initially his stylistic reference is Marco d'Oggiono, while as the years went by while maintaining his Leornadesque roots, he exalted chiaroscuro and began to show a drawing emphasis that demonstrates his attention to Mannerism. Although his apprenticeship to Leonardo is not certain, he is considered one of the leading exponents of the group of painters known as Leonardeschi on a par with Marco d'Oggiono, Benardino Luini, and Andrea Solario. His works are housed in the world's most prestigious museums: the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Szépmûvészeti Múzeum in Budapest, Národní Galerie in Prague, Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, National Gallery in London, Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and Uffizi in Florence.
