Christian Reder (Leipzig 1664? - Rome 1729) Stopping at a military encampment Oil on canvas 62 x 98 cm An almost identical work The Stopover in the Encampment was presented at Pandolfini auction house in Florence on 11/26/2014. A variant of the same subject with gallant scene in an encampment, is published by Sestieri on p. 413 fig.14 of the volume Pittori di Battaglie, the scholar notes the provenance from Christie's auction house lot 61, London July 5, 1985. After taking his first steps in the world of painting with an apprenticeship in Hamburg, he traveled in Europe, touching first London, then Venice and finally Rome. In the Eternal City he met with much acclaim and remained there for the rest of his life. He entered the circle of Nordic painters under the nickname Monsù Leandro and collaborated with Peter van Bloemen. He loved to alternate the production of battles with the realization of cultured scenes of life in military settings, immersed in extensive landscape settings.
