Marcantonio Franceschini (Bologna 1648 - 1729) workshop of Allegory of Obedience Oil on canvas 64 x 49 cm The canvas under consideration, because of the peculiar view from below, may originate from the studies made by the master for the realization of the allegories of the Corpus Christi church in Bologna. In particular of the depiction of the Allegory of Humility, which shares the yoke in its symbolism with the Allegory of Obedience. Born and raised in Bologna in 1665, Marcantonio Franceschini was a student of the painter Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibbiena. He completed his training in Carlo Cignani's atelier. Following the master, he worked on the porticos of the churches of San Bartolomeo and Servi in Bologna, while in Parma he worked on frescoes in the Palazzo del Giardino. In 1683 he opened his own workshop in the city, where many painters were trained: Tommaso Aldrovandini, Giacomo Boni, Francesco Caccianiga, Antonio Cifrondi, Pietro Antonio Avanzini and Gaetano Ferratini. A painter of remarkable skill, he is still admired today for his very fine technique. His painting, by means of beauty, aims to convey the sublime spiritual, intellectual, moral, and aesthetic sense of his characters. Many museums exhibit his works: the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna, and the Polo Museale in Florence.
