Antoon van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641) workshop of Crucifixion and pious women Oil on canvas 98 x 71.5 cm The work is inspired by Van Dyck's prototypes, and stems from the complex circle of authors following in the Antwerp master's footsteps. A friend of the painter Pieter Paul Rubens, from whom he learned the technique and partly the style, it then evolved into a personal language. After his youth spent in Antwerp he came to Italy, where he made the ritual journey of education; here he was able to observe and make his own the lessons of the great masters; exercises in copying works by Giorgione, Raphael, Guercino, Carracci, Bellini, Tintoretto, Leonardo and Titian, his favorite painter, appear in his notebook of drawings. On his return from Italy, he went to England to the court of Charles I Stuart, where he worked almost exclusively on portraits. In his Italian sojourn he was able to leave an indelible mark of his art, especially in the city of Genoa, his first Italian stop. Here where he took lodgings with the Flemish painters Lucas and Cornelis de Wael. Under the lantern he sometimes worked with Jan Roos, a painter permanently residing in the city and Italianized as Giovanni Rosa. Before his final farewell to Italy he was able to reside for short periods and practice his profession in Rome, Florence, Mantua, Venice and Sicily.
